The Over The Top Wedding of Brooke and Sam

Hello blog.  It’s been a while!!  The 2015 season is officially over.  And to celebrate here is a wedding that my team shot at the Saybrook Point Inn and Spa in Old Saybrook CT.  One of my favorite venues in the state.  When I met Brooke in Sam at one of my other offices (DD), I just knew that we were in for some spectacular images and I was right.  What an amazing backdrop to a fairy tale wedding  Sam and Brooke are two of the sweetest people we ever had the pleasure of filming.  Here is the highlight of the summer!!!

The Wedding of Gayle and JR

This was one of those weddings that was over the top and back down the other side!  Gayle and JR had the most spectacular wedding at the Langham Huntington hotel in Pasadena, California.  Everything was spectacular.  From the beautiful flowers to the talented singers at the church and at the reception.  The Grammy-nominated Louise Cornillez sang with the voice of an angel. The decor, the music, the families and the love made this a very memorable day.  Not to mention the absolutely stunning Langhan Huntington hotel for the back drop.  I will mark this down as one of the top weddings we have ever had the pleasure of filming.  This is the Same Day Edit that we played at the reception in front of all the guests on our large screen.

Side Note:

So, the morning of the wedding, we headed out to get some aerial shots of the beautiful Langham Huntington hotel.  I checked with the front desk, then with the manager, then the banquet manager, all said we were good to go.  We set up our take off spot from behind the hotel.  There wasn’t a soul out there. (much better for me because I don’t like flying over people)  I take two amazing shots and as I’m reeling it in, a secret service agent came up on us and told me to stop flying it.  Apparently, Eric Holder was at the hotel and his Secret Service detail was all around the hotel.  Oops.  They were good sports about it, one said “we were gonna shoot it down”, with a big smile on his face.  Always an adventure with Summer Wind Wedding Films!  :)

First Look – To Do or Not To Do

1st look

There are many reasons why a first look is a great idea.  Here are some of them…

1. Calming Effect:  A first look definitely takes the stress level down many notches.  The anticipation of seeing your soon to be spouse is over and it’s always a huge relief.

2. It’s special. A First Look is a moment the two of you can share without all the fanfare.

3. Alone time. The First Look is designed so that the moment is only shared by you and your filmmaker and photographer.  The benefit of the First Look is that you are alone and it’s private. This means you can embrace each other. You can cry without worrying about your makeup running down your face. You can laugh. You can kiss. You can actually talk to each other and tell your groom how excited you are to get married. You can do whatever feels right. The First Look is the perfect time to relax before the storm, that is your wedding day, really starts.

3. Timeline and portraits. If you decide to see each other before the ceremony, you have the opportunity to take your formal portraits after the First Look. Having a First Look can save you time and money – if you wait to see each other until the ceremony, you’ll likely spend 30-60 additional minutes on portraits. By having all of your portraits completed before the ceremony, you won’t have the caterer pressuring you to hurry before the food gets cold.

4. Spend more time with your guests. Since you’ve had a First Look and you’ve taken all of your portraits before the ceremony, you can head to the reception immediately after the ceremony. You’ve spent months planning your wedding and a lot of those plans have focused on the reception and celebrating your marriage. By having a First Look, you ensure that you’ll get to join the cocktail hour and spend more time with your guests.

We can help you with your timeline so you can enjoy the day and not feel ushered here and there all day.

DVD and BluRays To be Extinct Soon

2015 will be the year Summer Wind Wedding Films will start to wean ourselves away from DVDs and BluRay.  The formats will soon be added to the proverbial junk yard of old technology like 8-Track Tape, Cassette, Laser Discs, Beta…  We consider the film we produce for you a family heirloom.  When your 3 year old granddaughter asks you to watch your wedding film 30 years from now you’ll want to have a format that isn’t out dated and no means to play it back.

We now deliver the digital high definition version of your film on a custom thumb drive.  The beauty of digital is, you can make a copy of a copy of a copy… and the last copy will be exactly as the original.  No generation loss like the formats mentioned above.  ThumbDrive Pic

(The following is reprinted from Daily Finance)

The curtain is starting to close on the optical disc. You probably noticed that during Black Friday: There weren’t too many door buster deals for DVD or Blu-ray players. Folks just aren’t buying them anymore. The big sellers in consumer electronics were smart televisions that stream movies, TV shows, and video clips. There were also plenty of Chromecast, Roku and Fire TV set-top devices on sale, more gadgetry that renders the optical disc obsolete.

DVD sales peaked in 2004, and it’s been a slow fade. Some media platforms fall off the cliff when their consumption tenure is done, but optical discs have only seen unit sales decline by a third over the past decade.

They’re still around, but it won’t always be that way.

Here We Go…. Engagement Season Is Upon Us

Every year I make this statement to many couples after they tell me that they don’t have money in their budget for a wedding film.

If it’s not us please do yourself a favor, have some sort of video of your wedding.  You only get married once (hopefully)  and you don’t want to regret it later like I’ve seen so many times.  The video is forever, flowers die, food eaten, dress put away….”

Here is a reprint from a blog post in the Huffington Post:

In my last post, I provided fodder for the haters by recounting the story of my DIY Diva Wedding Hell. You would think, after that experience, not getting a wedding planner was my biggest regret. Nope, second biggest.

Like most brides, I looked forward to my wedding for 4 reasons:

  1. I was marrying a man better than I ever could have dreamed for myself
  2. The Big Day was a creative outlet for my DIY dreams
  3. Friends and Family were coming together from all across the country
  4. Biggest. Party. Ever.

After the wedding, here is what I had to show for it:

  • Gorgeous photos
  • A preserved wedding gown
  • Stories from friends and family about it being the best party, not just wedding, they had ever attended

Cue the regret. Like most brides, I budgeted for photos, but not wedding video. Like 98 percent of brides who make that decision, I regretted not getting a wedding video.

The photos bring back great memories, but let’s talk first dance. My fiancé surprised me with dance lessons soon after we were engaged. We spent months with a choreographer learning our first dance. We were in our own world on that dance floor. It was like the whole world melted away as we waltzed to Louis Armstrong.

In my mind, we were going to dance it again every year on our anniversary. We would never forget the steps. Our first anniversary, I was away on a business trip. Our second anniversary was the due date of our first baby. By the third anniversary, the steps were long forgotten.

Now let’s talk family and friends. Big family. Lots of friends. About 200 people flying in from all over the country. The award goes to Australia. It was the last family gathering for both of our grandmothers. The last one. No one wants to think about it, but it’s real. When else are you going to hear marriage advice from your grandmother. When else is she going to warn your husbands about your temper tantrums at the age of five?

It was also one of the last times we were to see one of my husband’s good friends. He died just a couple of years later in a snowmobile accident. We partied with him til 1am that night. Good times.

Lastly, the party. Oh the party. The live bar band. The Jack Daniels, for which I took so much crap in my last post. Yes, I drank at my wedding. Yes, I drank a lot. So did all the guests. Except the kids. They were running around with straws up their noses. It was a blast. We all had a great time.

And photos just aren’t enough to hold on to years later.

Amelia and James

********* WARNING!  Viewing this without tissues may be hazardous to your keyboard.

What a great wedding and couple!  The love Amelia and James have is forever.  I’ve been doing this long enough that you can just tell.  They compliment each other and make the perfect couple.  Our other team put this Same Day Edit together and played it back in front of their guests at the reception.  There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.  Love it when that happens!!!  Thank you Team Lenny!!!!

Oh, and the venue?  The Red Lion Inn is one our favorite places for a Rustic-Elligant wedding.  The food, out of this world!!!

Love These!!!!

“We apologize for the amount of time it’s taken us to get this note to you but just wanted to let you know how SPECTACULAR our wedding video was. We’ve already watched it 3 times and showed it to about 10 different people who’ve all needed tissues to watch it.

From the delivery of the DVD’s in that beautiful box to the incredible footage you captured and pieced together, it was really a work of art that we will cherish forever. Please extend our gratitude to your entire team.”  Ben and Emily
